Chandigarh, the City Of Gardens, is often known for its tasty tales. And since I am the biggest foodie most people have met, I decided on an impromptu trip to Chandigarh. Besides the palatial bungalows, luxurious cars, flea markets and altruistic people, the popular delicacies of Chandigarh are something that I felt I couldn’t miss! Chandigarh is full of flavourful and lip-smacking food that surely satisfied my gastronomy hunger. I went online to book a car on rent in Chandigarh with a local driver and get my hands on the famous food trails of Chandigarh. Let’s together take a dive into the scrumptious cuisines of Chandigarh!
- Dahi Bhalla
I began with the starters; creamy Dahi Bhalla is an extravagant dish light on the stomach but dripping with sweetness and tangy flavors. It is a must-have street food of Chandigarh, prepared with crisp hollow puris, loaded with sweet curd, mint sauce, tamarind chutney and topped with pomegranate seeds.
Where to eat: Snacks Corner and Garg Chaat.
- Chole Bhature
Moving on to the main course, my visit to Chandigarh would be incomplete without having the world-famous north Indian food, Chole Bhature. This dish is a must-try meal which is a perfect combo of spicy Indian food. The richness of gravy-laden chickpeas is served with fluffy bhature. Diced onions, pickle and coriander-mint sauce is served as complimentary with Chole Bhature, which takes the flavor of this dish to a different level.
Where to eat: Sodhi’s Zaika, Sai Sweets, Roadside stall (Khirki/Rehri), and Nukkar Dhaba.
- Rajma Chawal
I had heard that a must-have when in Chandigarh is Rajma chawal; an all time favorite of the food fans. This typical north Indian food is prepared with red kidney beans cooked in rich, spicy gravy and served with basmati rice. It is a complete meal that will surely rejoice in your appetite.
Where to eat: Sodhi’s Zaika, Pal Dhaba, Deluxe Dhaba and Bholey Di Hatti.
- Makki di roti & Sarson da saag
This world-famous mouth-watering dish is synonymous with Chandigarh. This delicious traditional food is a combination of sarso ka saag or mustard greens prepared with some luscious Indian spices and served with Makki di roti or flat cornbreads loaded with butter. I found this food in every famous dhabas or eaterie in Chandigarh.
Where to eat: Pal Dhaba, Amritsari Kulcha & Channa and Katani Dhaba.
- Paratha
My visit to Chandigarh would also be incomplete without tasting the delicious parathas. Chandigarh indeed serves the best parathas with various fillings like cheese, keema, paneer, spicy potato, etc. They are loaded with the creaminess of butter and served with pickles, curries or raitas, which are known as the best sides for paratha.
Where to eat: Pal Dhaba, Katani Dhaba, Gurbax Dhaba and Pahalwan Paratha Point.
- Lassi
The famous Punjabi lassi completes the food trail list of Chandigarh, and I myself am a big fan. The first sip of sweet lassi drove my taste buds to heaven. The curdled milk or lassi is a yogurt-based drink prepared with fruit and spices and garnished with exotic flavours and creamy malai toppings. On my visit to Chandigarh, I almost always started my morning with the freshness of mushy lassi.
Where to eat: Gopal Sweets, Sindhi Sweets and Pal Dhaba.
So, this was a trailer about the famous food trails of Chandigarh. If you are a foodie like me, a visit to Chandigarh is going to be fascinating with the savour and aroma of mouth-watering dishes.
